Refurbishment of a farm cottage in La Mazel, Southern France.  The existing ruined stone building is retained in its current aged state with only minimal repairs.

A new bedroom mezzanine occupies two thirds of the width, allowing the ground floor to feel more spacious.  The original first floor windows and rooflight over the staircase bring natural light into the living area and celebrate a disjunction between the found and proposed timber elements.
